STORM CLOUDは17世紀のヨーロッパで航海士が天気を予測するために使われていた簡易的な気象観測用の機器です。

天気管やストームグラスとも呼ばれており、18世紀には気象学の開祖のひとりであるロバート・フィッツロイ(Robert FitzRoy)によって、自身が船長を務めたイギリスの観測船「ビーグル号」の航海で使用され、結晶の現れ方と気象変化のガイドをまとめています。

結晶のでき方が変化する原因は今だ解明されていませんが、大気の温度や湿度、気圧、大気電気学的な影響によって、溶解度や結晶形状が変化すると考えられています。ついつい見とれてしまう神秘的な結晶は、お部屋の中にいても自然を感じる事が出来るインテリアオブジェとして楽しめます。
